Building Electric Guitars

Building electric guitars from kits. Can we do it? How will they turn out? Will they be playable?

Building Electric Guitars

I've always loved guitars of all sorts (whilst not being able to play them especially well), so when my friend Neil and I saw these guitar kits on a website that you build yourself we just had to give it a go.

We think they're actually
Saga guitar kits and they're pretty cheap. If they are indeed Saga kits, they get extremely diverse reviews ranging from very good, to one guy who decided to take his completed guitar into the woods and shoot it!

Anyway, we're not expecting too much from the finished guitars - and even if they play poorly when completed they should still look pretty nice as long as we don't mess up too badly!

We ordered the kits last night - one
Les Paul style and one Rickenbacker style which is, I think, based (loosely) on a Rickenbacker 330.

I'm planning on using this blog to document our progress - lets see if as complete novices, we can put these things together successfully, make them look good and play decently...

The kits should be arriving this week - unboxing photos will be shared as and when they arrive.

Hey Jon;

How is you build going?

I've been looking at the Saga kits for while and wondering if they are worth the time and expence.

Your original post was Feb. and it is now into April. Any Luck?

Hi Bill,

I have been updating the blog fairly regularly, although the URL did change very early on so it's possible you've bookmarked an old non-updated version of it. Take a look at www.jonlean.com/blog for the complete set of posts - including today's which shows the fully completed Rick kit (we finished that one over the weekend).

In terms of whether they're worth the time and expense I think it depends how much value you put on the experience: We've had great fun building these - to the point where I'm almost sad to be completing them, and it's been worth the money for that alone.

But being realistic about it we could probably have bought similar or better quality guitars off the shelf for similar money. That said, I really want to do another one because it's great fun! In fact my next plan is to buy an old wreck of a guitar and attempt to strip it down, respray it and make it like new. Not sure how that will go, but I'll probably blog about it here - so watch this space!!
